“My daughter has gone to this school since 1st grade, she is now in 3rd grade. Her 1st grade teacher was absolutely wonderful, she offerred after school tutoring and was very flexible on conference times (which she did every quarter). Her 2nd grade teacher was not very involved with her at all (unless she acted up). Which she did, because her dad got deployed for 10 months. Since this school started letting non-military kids and teachers through its doors there has been a definite lack in respect and sensitivity to the uniqueness of the military family. It's too soon to tell how good her 3rd grade teacher is. My daughter seems to really like her so far. In all, SC schools are notoriously sub-par as far as quality education. This is one of the better schools.”

“My daughter attended this school for kindergarten and is going back for first grade in a week. Her kdg. experience was a good one. She learned many things. I am amazed at how well she reads now, I surely was not reading at the end of kdg. when I was little. Her teacher was easy to talk to and genuinely cared about her students.”

“My son attended kindergarten here. We then moved to another state and he was woefully unprepared for first grade. He was so behind that we had to hire a private tutor to chatch him up. He is now an honor roll third grader, but as far as we can tell, learned absolutely nothing in kindergarten. He also had 30 students in his kindergarten class which certainly did not help matters. HIs teacher also discouraged any parent volunteers in her classroom despite my many offers to help her any way she needed. I was extremely disappointed in his kindergarten experience, especially when comparing it to my younger son's who is in kindergarten now at their new school. There is simply no comparison!”

“This school was amazing until the principal staffing changed. Now, the school doesn't show any respect for parents nor do they act in the best interest of the children who attend. The Majority of these children are military kids and it is sad that our service members have to send their child to this school if they want to live on base.”

“I have a daughter in first grade at Marrington. Her teacher has gone above and beyond in helping with testing and materials to meet the needs of my advanced learner. I was a bit hesitant about enrolling at this school, but am so thankful I did. Our last school in Oregon was horrid and I was happy to see that my daughter would not be getting another year of poor education. The front office staff leaves a lot to be desired and the principal seems more attentive to the middle school, but I've been pleased otherwise.”

“After starting the shool year with 3 kindergarten teachers, the school dropped one two weeks into the year. They students were divided between the two remaining classes, resulting in 30 kids to a class vs the 20 they started the year with. I'm very dissappointed in the lack of teacher interest in having conferences requested by parents. The classes are overcrowded, and the extra curricular ativities are non-existant.”

“The first grade teachers are wonderful. I agree with the parent who said teachers here yell. Yes, they do. Most of them. There are a few who are kind and gentle. This school, (I think all schools in Berkeley Co.) cares more about discipline than academics. Unfortunately the students aren't being challenged enough. I think some of the teachers (most of the 1st grade, art and music) really care about the students. As for the schools around here, it's the best choice. The staff is rude! The former principal was great! I don't know the new one well enough to make a call. If your child is going into first grade, you'll be fine...if they are going into kindergarten do your homework.”

“I have had 2 children go to Marrington. My youngest started kindergarten here and is now almost finished with the 2nd grade, my oldest son is at Marrington Middle and has been there for the 5,6 and 7th grades. They are both doing great and I have loved all their teachers. The staff has been very friendly for the past 3 years. I would definitely recommend these schools!”

“My daughter went to Marrington for four years and we were extremely pleased. The staff and teachers are wonderful and the parental involvement in excellent! It is by far the best public school in the state.”

“I agree that this school should only be for military students instead of allowing all Berkley county students, since it is,however, on base. This was my sons first year of school and he came into kindergarten knowing more than he was taught in this entire year. He has 2 1/2 months left and I am struggling to teach him what he should be expected to already know at our next duty station!”

“Men-Riv Elementary was closed and my daughter was moved to Marrington in October. I was a little distressed but found out this move was a great thing. The building layout for the 1rst graders gives them a safe and indoor place to stay before class begins. The teachers are effective and enthusiastic. Being on base there is less fear of preditors in and outside the school. Plus military life brings people from all backgrounds so my child could make friends who had broader interests and traditions. I believe this is important for social growth. We moved before completing the year. Compared to her current school in Oregon, Marrington is still the better school this school year.”

“This school would be nice if it was just for miliary kids. This school has kids being bused in from off base. If I lived off based I would bring them to Marrington Middle. The schools in the area are bad and I would not be comfortable having my child go outside the surrounding area schools. In regards for my child attending Marrington Middle as a military child I think that a 4th grade student should not be in the same building as a 8th grader. The school is tucked away in a corner and it seems the County likes it that way. I have been in the Military for 14 years and I must say this is the worst educational system I have ever come across.”

“Adult[s] in this school yell. My son is on the all A honor roll and has perfect attendance. These adults are not yelling at him, but he is scared just the same. I don't believe this a very nurturing environment for our children, especially considering many of them are military and they move constantly. These kids deserve our resect.”

“My son is in first grade at Marrington and I love the school. The 'everyday math' program gets them excited about math and my son's reading has really improved. The administration is good, but the teachers really make a difference. Most of the first grade teachers met individually with the students before the school year started which I think is extremely helpful.”

“I have 2 girls that attend marrington elementary. The teachers and staff are excellent and have made us feel right at home. They have gone through big changes this year. Menriv elem. Closed last may and has joined marrington elem. Marrington elementary is now a k-3 school. Marrington middle now serves grades 4-8. This is supposed to be a temporary (few yrs) situation. I felt it was important to post this so parents can make a choice.”
